You Deserve The Best Tone.

  • The pickups in the Dickey Betts/Duane Allman’s 1961 Gibson SG were the most important part of its legendary tone, especially on recordings like Statesboro Blues. While his touch, phrasing, and amp setup were crucial, the Gibson PAF (Patent Applied For) humbuckers in his SG were the key ingredient that made its tone so iconic. Here’s why:

    1. The Magic of PAF Humbuckers

Duane’s SG was equipped with original 1961 Gibson PAF humbuckers, widely regarded as some of the best pickups ever made. These pickups gave his guitar:

    • Smooth sustain – essential for his soaring slide lines.
    • Warm, fat midrange – perfect for blues and rock.
    • Clear articulation – ensuring every note remained distinct.

    2. The Perfect Fit for Slide Guitar

Duane’s signature bottle-neck slide technique required pickups that could capture both delicate nuances and powerful sustain. The PAFs excelled at this because they had:

    • A natural compression, making every note bloom effortlessly.
    • Even frequency response, preventing harsh highs or muddy lows.
    • Excellent dynamics, allowing soft touches and aggressive slides to be equally expressive.

    3. Rich Harmonics & Singing Overtones

PAFs from this era had a more open, harmonic-rich sound. This allowed Duane and Dickey to get:

    • Lush harmonic overtones, adding dimension to the tone.
    • A vocal-like quality, making slide playing almost sing.
    • A sweet, singing sustain, especially when paired with a cranked amp.

    4. Interaction with Amps & Overdrive

The vintage output of PAFs meant they could push an amp into the perfect amount of overdrive without sounding too distorted. Through a cranked Marshall or Fender amps, the PAFs provided:

    • Thick, creamy overdrive with no harshness.
    • Perfect note bloom, essential for slide phrasing.
    • A raw, organic breakup that gave his playing extra emotion.

    5. The Secret Behind "Statesboro Blues" Tone

Without those 1961 PAF humbuckers, the tone wouldn’t have had the smooth-yet-biting sustain, warmth, and clarity that defined his legendary tone. Duane and Dickey's touch and phrasing were irreplaceable, but those pickups were the foundation that made it all possible.

Limited Edition - Get Them While You Can

During the R&D process, the Black Label design was directly compared to the original pickups from the legendary 1961 Gibson SG. No cost was spared in making a pickup that captures the sound and feel of a 1961 PAF Humbucker. The tone is spot on.
